Yarsagumba: A Caterpillar-Fungus is also Known as The 'Himalayan Viagra' / Himalayan Gold Rush.The origins are Tibetan: Yart Swa Gun Bu, which means ‘herb in the summer and insect in the winter'.Before the rainy season, the fungus infects caterpillar larvae living in the grassy soil. When it finally attacks the head, the larvae die. The stalks of the fungus then propagate in the head, growing 2-3 inches long and become brown in colour. It tastes like mushroom, flavoursome, sweet and neutral in nature. It can be eaten plain or powdered, mixed with milk or water.This Caterpillar Fungus is endemic to Bhutan, China, India, and Nepal and threatened due to overexploitation driven by increasing demand, especially in traditional medicine markets. In an effort to conserve and protect this species, extraction/harvesting and trade of Caterpillar Fungus is regulated through permits, guidelines, and policies of the range states, such as Sikkim and Uttarakhand in India . Known as the most expensive herb it can cost anywhere from 15 lalhs for half a kg to more . Around 3,000 pieces of yarsagumba are needed to make a kilogram. The conditions faced for harvesting these are most harsh. The routes are treacherous & one has to face freezing winds, rain, strong ultraviolet rays, low oxygen and altitude sickness...some have even fall off the unforgiving steep cliffs to collect this Herbal Gold.
